TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language)
An intensive, 7 day theoretical and skills development course in the Teaching of English as a Foreign Language.
We offer an internationally recognised Certificate in TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) in Cape Town and other centres throughout South Africa. We have trained TEFL teachers on an ongoing basis for 16 years and are well established in the TEFL Training field.
Our course is designed to develop the skills required to be a TEFL teacher and to make you aware of your own language and the difficulty faced by those who seek to learn it. Educational, psychological and linguistic theory is reviewed where relevant but the focus is more practical than theoretical; after all, it is not the knowledge we are after but the skill.
Observation and teaching practice would take place over two weeks, depending on the person's training and background
For those wishing to teach English while travelling or working abroad our course is a wonderful opportunity to add to your skills or make a career change.
During the intensive, classroom-based component, assessment is continuous and based on participation in group discussions and performance in short, simulated teaching sessions. While this course covers all the main areas necessary for teaching English abroad, we do recommend that students register for the longer, 100 hr TESOL course for reasons mentioned in the TESOL information section.
Introduction to language teaching
Contextualisation and getting meaning across
Receptive skills procedure
Activities and materials
Course participants will be supplied with a manual which consolidates concepts covered on the course and students are encouraged to keep their own notes. Good English Grammar and Teaching books are discussed during the course. A list of recommended books is included in the information package.
We require candidates to meet the high standards of the course, and we evaluate course participants in three ways:
1. Course participation
Attendance and level of course participation are recorded and assessed by the trainer.
Candidates are required to submit a lesson planning project and will receive continual feedback assessment on all tasks
3. Course participants who receive positive feedback and assessments on all points will receive a certificate indicating a grading of the candidate's performance in each area. When a candidate does not meet the criteria or is struggling in any area of assessment, the course trainer will assist with further input and practice, modules may need to be redone or additional practice could be arranged. As the course trainer works closely with all participants and monitors each participant's progress from the beginning, there is plenty of time to work on any areas needing improving.
Both Saturdays from 9:00am to 4:00pm and Monday to Friday from 6:00pm to 10:00pm. You will need to allocate an additional 10 to 12 hours over the week in order to complete homework assignments and prepare lessons.
